SCALE Took New York By Storm

SCALE: The ASID National Student Summit took place in the city that never sleeps - New York - March 1-3, 2019. Attracting more than 400 students from 84 colleges and universities across the country, SCALE explored relevant, timely topics in design and included experiences created to ready students for their first professional positions.

A world-class group of speakers, led by keynotes Liz Ogbu, founder and principal, Studio O; George Yabu and Glenn Pushelberg, partners, Yabu Pushelberg; Cindy Allen, editor-in-chief, Interior Design Magazine; and BJ Miller, founder and principal, The Vision Group, inspired and encouraged students to advance in their careers by providing a meaningful perspective and understanding of the hopes and fears of the next generation of design professionals.

The day before SCALE began, ASID Student Portfolio Competition (SPC) finalists presented their work to an esteemed panel of judges from Benjamin Moore, HDR, HKS, HOK, ICRAVE, Perkins+Will, Rockwell Group, and O+A, who were tasked with choosing the winners. The chosen were recognized in a ceremony on March 1 and earned a scholarship from the Benjamin Moore & Co. Foundation and broad, national recognition.

Through exclusive, curated project and design firm tours of Gensler, HOK, Haworth, ICRAVE, Benjamin Moore, Rockwell Group, Herman Miller, and others, students got an insider’s view of firm culture and workplace design that will help them set their expectations upon entering the professional workforce. By participating in the tours, students discovered the living, breathing impact of top-notch design projects on people and their communities.

The Learning Lounge at SCALE gave attendees the opportunity to connect with Sherwin-Williams, Benjamin Moore, Williams-Sonoma To-the-Trade, Humanscale, Wilsonart, and Delos Rugs to learn about industry products and services and practice their networking skills. The Learning Lounge provided an ideal space for students to get to know each other and prepare for the next exciting SCALE experience.

The ASID National Career Fair, featuring an eclectic group of top design firms and companies, invited students to interview for 2019 internships and entry-level positions. Armed with their resumes, best business attire, and professional attitudes, students had the opportunity to interview with HKS, Perkins+Will, HOK, Humanscale, ICRAVE, Sherwin-Williams, IA Interior Architects, ForrestPerkins, HDR, M Moser Associates, NBBJ, New York School of Interior Design, Rockwell Group, O+A, ennead architects, Louisiana State University, and Vocon.
