About Interior Design(er)

On average, people spend approximately 90% of their time indoors according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).1 Interior designers can develop the design solution for any place where you live, work, play, heal, and learn.

Interior design supports the human experience through the functionality, materiality, safety and building codes, and much more of the interior built environment. Interior designers develop solutions that reflect their client's needs and demonstrate their client’s values to all who enter or see their space. Effective interior designers support the human condition first, and the interior space second. Interior designers also focus on accessibility and inclusivity in their work to make sure that interiors can be used by all.

The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) believes that design impacts lives and collaborates with others to promote the value of interior design.

THE ECOSYSTEM OF INTERIOR DESIGN
ASID is a community of designers, educators, students, and affiliates who believe Design Impacts Lives. ASID acknowledges the varied voices, perspectives, and professionals – including all collaborators who play a part in the shaping of the interior-built environment.

As the only association representing all sectors of interior design, ASID is a connected network of peers, thought leaders, and collaborators.

ASID QUALIFICATIONS MATTER

ASID Practitioners are interior designers who have met ASID’s qualifications and elevate, inspire, and lead the practice of the interior design profession.

Being an ASID Practitioner is a mark of distinction in the interior design industry that indicates a commitment to professionalism, expertise, and ethical conduct. ASID-qualified interior design practitioners believe that design impacts lives and meet the standards of ASID membership to support their client’s needs.

Advocacy in Interior Design

Twenty-eight U.S. states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and eight Canadian provinces have enacted interior design legislation to date . Use of the terms “interior designer,” “certified interior designer,” and “registered interior designer,” vary from state to state, as do the regulations, practice rights, and responsibilities of interior designers in each jurisdiction.

ASID’s advocacy serves not only the designers with education, experience, and examination-based knowledge but the interior design profession at large advancing the health, safety, and overall well-being of building occupants.
