ASID Mourns the Passing of Shelley Siegel, FASID

The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) mourns the passing of Rochelle “Shelley” Gill (Cohen) Siegel, ASID fellow and former president of the ASID Florida South chapter.

Siegel was an accomplished interior designer and educator. An early pioneer of Universal Design, she traveled the country promoting aesthetically pleasing universal design concepts for the home, workplace, hospitality and healthcare environments, fire safety in interiors and furniture, and the importance of professional licensing for interior design. She served as president of the American Society of Interior Designers Florida South Chapter from 1993-1994. In 2004 she was inducted into the ASID College of Fellows in recognition of her professional achievements. In 2010, she was inducted into the ASID Florida South Chapter Hall of Fame, and in 2016 she was appointed by President Barack Obama to the US Access Board. As a federal appointee, she participated in regulating and implementing the Americans with Disabilities Act.

“ASID shares our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Shelley Siegel. Shelley was not only an important advocate for design, she was also a champion for accessibility and a dedicated philanthropist. Most importantly, Shelley was a devoted wife and business partner to her husband Roy, mother to her daughters Heidi and April, and Nona to her granddaughter Shona. Shelley will be missed, though her legacy will live on through the impact she left on all those she touched.” – Gary Wheeler, FASID and CEO of ASID
