Life Membership

CONCEPT

Life Membership is an honor recognizing individual members for their special contributions to ASID. This membership status is confined to past ASID Society-level presidents and other professional members who qualify within the eligibility guidelines. It should not be confused with retired or inactive status, nor tied to financial hardship considerations. New life members must pay dues for the year in which they are approved. However, after the year has ended, the life member is exempt from all annual dues payments. Life members retain all rights and privileges of regular professional membership.

ELIGIBILITY

Eligibility for Life Membership may be obtained in two ways:

  • A recommendation by the ASID Board of Directors for past Society presidents who have reached the age of 60. Life Membership may be accorded to a past Society president who
    • is in good standing (dues fully paid through the current year)
    • has made continuing and important contributions to the chapter or to the Society
    • has been a professional member for a minimum of 25 years

  • A nomination of a professional member that is initiated by their current chapter board of directors. Please note that this nomination is confidential and that the nominee may not fill out their own forms. Life Membership may be accorded to a professional member who
    • is in good standing (dues fully paid through the current year)
    • has made continuing and important contributions to the chapter or to the Society
    • has been a professional member for a minimum of 25 years

    • is retired and no longer actively involved in practice

JUDGING

Life membership recommendations will be reviewed once a year. All applications are reviewed by the ASID Examiners Committee, which will send names of approved nominees to the ASID Board of Directors for final approval as a consent agenda item. The ASID Board of Directors is the only body that may elect a member to life membership. Life membership bestowed in any given year shall not exceed 1/10 of one percent of the total number of professional members of the Society at the beginning of the concerned calendar year.

As was stated in the Submission Guidelines above, nominees will not be considered if their nomination packages are missing any of the required documents, if insufficient information has been supplied, or if nominees do not meet all the criteria. If there is reason to disapprove the recommendation for life membership, the recommendation, with a letter outlining reasons for such disapproval, will be returned to the sponsors of such nomination.

Once the ASID Board of Directors has granted Life Membership status, the candidate will be notified directly. Life membership certificates are automatically ordered by ASID headquarters and will be forwarded to the chapter president. In the event that life membership status is not granted, the president of the nominee's chapter will be notified.
