Chair's Message - May 2018

Fellow of ASID – Really?

Last summer I was inducted into the ASID College of Fellows at Celebration: the ASID Awards Gala in San Diego. As Suzan Globus, FASID, LEED AP ID+C placed the medal around my neck, one thought kept running through my mind – “How did I get here?”

The ASID College of Fellows is full of people who have had a significant impact on our profession, including Calvin Hefner, FASID, CAPS (who traveled all the way from Ecuador to San Diego to see my induction); Joan Gaulden, FASID who I admired from afar when I was a young designer learning the ropes; and Michael Thomas, FASID, CAPS and Sari Graven, FASID, with whom I previously served on the ASID National Board and whose mentorship was invaluable. I was elated to receive the call that I would be inducted into this distinguished group. Receiving this honor has given me the chance to reflect on my career and my progression from Student member to ASID Fellow.

I have chosen to share my story in hopes of inspiring students to aim high, to reach for the stars, and to make a difference by harnessing the power of design. I encourage those starting out in this profession to challenge themselves, not to set boundaries, and to be open to listening, learning, and growing.

I urge the design students I meet to submit their work in the ASID Student Portfolio Competition. Earning industry accolades will help you stand out from the crowd, but no one else is going to submit your work for you. As you build your portfolio and begin advancing in the industry, apply to the Ones to Watch Scholars program, ASID National Awards, and ASID National Honors. As Interior Designers, we work incredibly hard to design spaces that impact lives. As an organization, ASID is proud to recognize those who have excelled in their careers and who create change in our profession through their dedication and work.

I continue to be inspired by the individuals I meet at the annual ASID Awards Gala and everything they have achieved. Please join me at Celebration in Washington, D.C., July 21, as we induct nine people into the Class of Fellows and honor the 2018 ASID Award Winners!
